I've never been tempted to follow any companies or anyone I don't know. I also have no problem un-following people who tweet often about things I don't care about. But I don't use twitter the same way most do, apparently.

Mierow- I gave up Facebook for Lent and used Twitter instead. For some reason, Twitter doesn't quite cut it for me, only facebook does the trick. I also went through the withdrawl of not being able to contact my friends. Once I got over that, I didn't even think about it anymore. I also did get to know other people who are physically present in my life better. I learned how to play my guitar better. But all in all, I agree with your post.

I also wrote a blog about my time away from FB during Lent. I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. I grew a lot during the last 6 weeks or whatever it was. Now, it's just going to be a battle of monitoring my time on Facebook. I'm guessing it may be the same with you. :)

Great post, and great job with the sacrifice!

I know IT guys who do well and have never taken a test, but here at www.comptec.com we make our living helping people get certifications. When you say I’m willing to stand on my own work and not on a piece of paper, I just wanted to point out that getting certifications is WORK. And many professionals stand on their many years of hands on experience AND all the extra work they put into achieving certifications. Employers seem to like that.

yeah. i believe that all women can be wished a happy mother's day on mother's day...as can all men be wished a happy father's day on father's day...i don't believe that one has to have produced biologically a child in order to celebrate that day. i whole heartedly agree, Jon.

isn't it amazing how people can read into things!?!?

Great ideas. I've been wondering about how much of the "business" and "start up" ideas I have been reading lately can transition into a college or university. I certainly hope so.

Thanks Mike & Roger for the thoughts and ideas. I hope this sparks more discussion. I know that it already has for me, both at work and at home.

One of the things we talked about yesterday was how this may be implemented into education. It may be easier at the higher ed level because you can break it down to each area/college/program. There is a university around the Twin Cities that almost everyone seems to know the "mantra" of their MBA program: "Good. For Business." I'm encouraged to see the possibilities of making small changes like this a reality.

Interesting discussion. I agree that organisations often lose sight of the real goal of a mission statement in favor of ultra-distilled, committee-created prose. That is an easy and deadly trap to fall into. I wrote about the same idea in my blog today:

Thanks for the discussion.

Art of the Start is an awesome read. You should check it out after Wikinomics. I agree that educational institutions have a long way to come in terms of understanding the difference between a mission statement and a mantra. Educational institutions have to really understand what their product/service is, who they are trying to reach, and what makes them unique. With so many different programs, it is pretty difficult to boil it down to 2 or 3 words. Maybe they should consider multiple mantras?
